Review
"Covering an impressive amount of material, A Question of Space is an engaging read for those fascinated by the history of the space program."—Jeff Fleischer, Foreword Reviews (Jeff Fleischer Foreword Reviews)“Let’s be honest: all you really must know about life in space is how astronauts go to the bathroom. The answer is flushed out here in candid, comedic detail. But wait, there’s so much more! Leave it to this self-proclaimed ‘Ordinary Spaceman’ to understand the banal is not boring. To the contrary, it’s what fascinates us most.”—Miles O’Brien, award-winning journalist in science, technology, aviation, and aerospace (Miles O'Brien 2017-12-14)“Clay Anderson dispels myths and simplifies complex subjects for the reader and with examples from his personal experiences provides insight into the daily life of an astronaut. As a teacher trying to fuel the curiosity of and relate relevant topics to students, I would keep a copy of this book on my desk.”—Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, earth scientist, educator, and retired astronaut (Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger 2017-10-02)“Clayton Anderson is an American hero but he’s as down-to-earth as they come. From the simple to the sublime, It’s a Question of Space is a wonderful collection of stories and answers to questions we all have about traveling in space. Drawn into his easy-to-understand explanations and humorous anecdotes, I couldn’t put it down.”—Tom Abrahams, author of the Spaceman Chronicles series (Tom Abrahams 2017-09-25)

This book is a fun and fascinating read in a simple question and answer format. Clay's humor and witty answers to questions like 'Is the International Space Station fake?' & 'How do you use the bathroom in space?' do not disappoint! I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in astronauts & what it actually means to live in space! It's an easy, informative and enjoyable read.
Got this for my 11 yr. old. It answers a lot of those common space questions and not so common. My son really enjoyed it.
I read this book cover-to-cover as part of my research for my first science fiction novel. If I was not working on this book, it would have been difficult to get through all of these questions because they are so scattered. There are chapters that slightly break up the topics into the “Life of an Astronautâ€, “The International Space Stationâ€, “Philosophy and Politics†and the like, but frequently the same topic reappears not only within the same section, but also in other parts of the book. It would have been a much more helpful book, if the author wrote a textbook on how the body, objects and the like are affected by space flight, with sections on how to operate, build and otherwise organize a spaceship. It seems unlikely that there is a comprehensive multi-disciplinary book about how the human body reacts to space, how chemistry works in, how spaceships are engineered and the like. Each of these topics is typically handled separately. While this imaginary book is on my wish list, this current real publication does a pretty good job of addressing many of the curious aspects of spaceflight in a single source. In it Clayton C. Anderson, a recently retired astronaut who is a long-time aerospace engineering lecturer, answers questions he has received from the general public online over the years. Anderson offers a lot of insights in part because he has spent a very long time in space in comparison with an average astronaut, 150 days on just one tour of the International Space Station. While I would have preferred more scientific and technological explanations, it was enjoyable to read a book spiced with Clayton’s humor (I think I giggled a couple of times; I don’t usually sympathize with American humor). In reading this book, I was searching for clues on what it would be like for an alien species to live for decades in a weightless spaceship traveling through the vacuum of empty space between solar systems. By reading the whole book, I found bits of information, but there are too many summaries because each answer assumes no familiarity with the rest of the content of the book as they are the isolated replies Clayton gave to a specific query. For example on page 10, he summarizes that prior to launch he was trained in the “Russian systems (i.e., how to poop and pee, eat, and sleep in their kayuta…â€, and then he covers each of these in more detail as questions specifically about poop or sleep come up. When he does zoom in closely on specific tasks in space, the text is particularly interesting (at least for my research project). For example, when answering how one gets “dressed in spaceâ€, he explains that one has to be “pulling your head through the rubber gasket-lined metal hole that attaches to your space helmet†with a “level of physical exertion that can cause the puking fit…†Then, he comments that it was also particularly difficult to put on shoes, but that they weren’t necessary and that he typically went around shoeless (14). To place readers more fully into space in fiction, these types of details really help writers. Most of science fiction has characters in full gravitational pull in space rather than weightless and otherwise skims over the realities of spaceflight perhaps because there have previously been few books like this that zoom into these details.A pleasant and insightful read for any fan of spaceflight as well as for researchers of space exploration (including rocket scientists). There is enough structure to the replies to take the reader on an exciting, dramatic narrative into space without taking on personal risk of exposure to radiation or potential death from all sorts of space-related disasters (explained herein).Pennsylvania Literary Journal, Volume X, Issue 2, Summer 2018 (Anaphora Literary Press)
I was really looking forward to this book as I devour everything I can get my hands on with regards to space and space travel. Clayton does offer some great insight, and answers some really interesting questions, but unfortunately this book as a whole just didn’t do it for me. Many of the questions he answers are done multiple times throughout the book, the question was just asked in a slightly different way. So, it got a little boring to read the same things over and over again. I also found it hard to focus as I was expecting a little more detail and information on the questions he answers. Most of them are so high-level that once I start getting interested in what he’s talking about, he’s done and moving on to the next question.I’m sure his actual autobiography would be better, but he makes reference to it so often throughout this book I find myself not wanting to read it all just out of principal because it felt like it was getting shoved in my face.I think this could’ve done with a little more editing and organization to make it a more compelling Q&A read, but I do think it could be a great book for younger readers who have a very small window of understanding into these concepts and just want a high-level explanation of many things, instead of more in-depth explanations of a few things.I received a copy of this story via Netgalley, and have provided a review of my own accord.
This was a interesting read. It's a Question of Space provides the reader with an unique perspective. In fact, this perspective of an astronaut that has traveled to space is quite rare. In spite of his lofty career accomplishments, Mr. Anderson does a great job of answering tons of questions about space in a down to earth fashion that is engaging for kids and adults alike. He provides frank insight on what it's like to be a NASA astronaut, both good and bad. I appreciated his encouragement of good priorities being modeled as he mentioned God, family, and career amidst his positive outlook. I also liked that he discussed challenges he's experienced during his career and how he overcame them. The content is informative and fascinating. I originally got this book for my kids to read, but enjoyed reading it myself and learned a good bit about life on the space station.I received an advance reading copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I was not obligated to write a positive review.
Fantastic book that takes complicated subjects and makes them easily understandable. Perfect gift for young readers interested in STEM. It's well-organized and brilliantly presented.
