Prof. Janelle Wong’s “Immigrants, Evangelicals, and Politics in an Era of Demographic Change” (Russell Sage Foundation, 2018) is the best book I have seen that explores the political impact of the growing Asian American and Latinx Christian evangelical communities. Her multimethod approach - combining site visits, in-depth interviews, and systematic analysis of a 2016 Collaborative Multiracial Post-Election Survey (CMES) - should be required reading for everyone interested in American politics, the rise of religion in politics, and race relations in America.White evangelical support for President Trump has been seen as key to his 2016 victory, but Prof. Wong analyzes the important ways that non-White evangelicals differ from their White counterparts, and makes predictions about the growing influence of non-White evangelicals in upcoming elections. Non-White evangelicals define the “us" and “them” notions of group boundaries more broadly than their White counterparts, because they have more non-Christian friends and relatives. White evangelicals tend to have more association between their religious identification and political affiliation, and are more likely to have “in-group embattlement” feelings that lead them to want to defend the U.S. from what they perceive as attacks on the U.S. as a white, Christian nation. Overall, except for the abortion and marriage equality issues, non-White evangelicals are more progressive than even White non-evangelicals on immigration, social services, and other issues, indicating that making predictions about how “evangelicals” will vote in 2018 or beyond is futile unless the nuances described by Prof. Wong are taken into account. Read it for more details!

This is a stunning analysis of the connection between the political views of evangelicals and demographic change by a political scientist at the top of her game. As Janelle Wong notes, both the politics of evangelicals and U.S. demographic change since 1965 have received much attention, but few scholars have examined the connections between them. Her book analyzes the growing number of Asian American, African American and Latinx evangelicals as well as their white counterparts. Wong is particularly interested to see how race is shaping politics among these different groups. Wong demonstrates that demographic change is not transforming political coalitions as rapidly as some expected because of the ways that race and racial anxieties are generating a highly conservative political outlook among white evangelicals. In addition she lays out how and why white evangelicals have been able to exercise remarkable political power within the GOP. Sharply analyzed, methodologically innovative, and well written, this is a crucial book for understanding American politics.

In this book, Dr. Wong provides solid analyses of public opinion data about White Evangelicals and what is driving their political attitudes and behavior, including their overwhelming support for Trump. Spoiler alert: it’s racism. Compared to other Whites, White Evangelicals are more conservative on policy issues, and 80 percent of them voted for Trump. They’re much more likely to believe immigration is bad for the economy and more conservative on racial issues, environmental issues, and economic issues. That’s all pretty interesting, but here’s the twist: this conservativism seems to derive from the growing diversity of the Evangelical community: more and more Latinos and Asian Americans are identifying as Evangelicals, and that is generating feelings of anti-White discrimination among White Evangelicals. What I found most interesting about Dr. Wong’s book is her look to the future politics of this community. Today, White Evangelicals dominate, but over time the Evangelical community may reflect the very different policy and political preferences of their growing numbers of Asian American and Latino members. Read the book, and stay tuned!

This book is THE book for understanding a critical demographic that will help decide upcoming elections. Janelle Wong skillfully weaves together multimethod insights into a study of an frequently-ignored group in American politics: evangelical immigrants. In the era of Trump-supporting white evangelical power, and also growing immigrant voter power, people who want to make predictions about American politics must read this book.
