I am writing the same business about this book that I wrote about the book "The Barefaced Messiah", in particular what they do not cover the origins of Scientology beliefs. Basically, the principals and concepts used by L. Ron Hubbard in scientology are of both Hindu and Buddhist origins. For instance, the tone scale or chart, the processing or auditing, the ethics used in regards to the "states of existence" (which are used by Psychologists in "Moral Reconation Therapy") are all of Hindu origins. The eight dynamics used are all of Hindu origins. The 56 precepts (lessons) used in Scientology are of Buddhist origin. As such I have always thought that they should have included the Buddhist Doctrine of "The Twelve Links of Interdependence" for the fun of it, but he, L. Ron Hubbard didn't think this appropriate . As I stated in my other review, no one man could of come up with all this all by himself. The excuse has been given, for why he did not explain Scientology's origins is because of the bigoted and the dogmatic prejudices against these two religions. But such an omission implies that he came up with all that he did all by himself. He also, from my experience, had the perchance or the nerve to have books removed from many libraries to prevent anyone from linking Scientology to these two religions. The only place I found where such a admission that Scientology was in any way linked to Eastern religion was in their own dictionary which stated that the religion most closely resembling Scientology was Buddhism. From what I know of it, actually Hinduism seems much closer but I also believe that as Judaism was the base religion for Christianity and that Hinduism was the base religion for Buddhism more or less makes this a mute point. In other words, one had to exist before the other could occur and as such the first one had to be necessarily supportive of the second and not in any fundamental way contradicting the other. (this is the kind of thing that Eric Hoffer in his book "The True Believer" manage to leave out on his description of "mass movements") The state of our population's ignorance as to these two religions that L. Ron Hubbard used to proclaim and promote Scientology as a "new religion" has almost wiped out it credibility as a viable and sustainable one, as if nothing more than a temporary phenomenon. To sum it up, there are a lot of spiritual truths employed in Scientology, although sometimes in rather less than ideal ways, that should not be ignored. Again, when looking at Scientology, do not "throw the baby out with the bathwater".
Part of this book was written by LRH's son DeWolf until the ruthless CO$ administration forced him to sign a non disclosure agreement so he could see anything from his father's estate after his death. The picture painted here is less than flattering to say the least. There is even an account of someone who may have been Hubbard raping a Sea Org member, apparently using Sex Magik techniques used by Crowley. Nibs (DeWolf) said that his dad considered himself to be the successor to Crowley and it was his goal to finish his work. Several human rights abuses from several different people inside the sea org and from the independent Scientology branches are included here. The book also goes into detail about the scandals of the church including the Snow White fiasco and how it was discovered by the FBI. It also goes into great detail about the takeover of the church that Miscavige engineered by suppressing Hubbard's will and naming himself leader over his last will and testament. Highly recommended.
Whatever else he might have been, L. Ron was a real work of art. The gathering he created was, like the self-actualization fellowship, the O.T.O., and a few others, a place for like minded (or weak minded) people to gather for indoctrination. Now whether Zenu/Zemu clobbered Earth 75 million years ago or not - leaving body cooties behind - is something that may bug you, but it doesn't bug me.The man made a big mark on western civilization (good, indifferent, or bad) and that's for sure! His followers face the challenge of keeping his 'church' viable and with all the defections that may be tough. Wait, and see.In the meantime, BUY, and READ this book!
The book is anti-Hubbard but insightful. Its only one side of the story. Hubbard in some ways was a great man and in some ways was very faulted. But aren't we all?
Lots of California cult history by former Riverside Mission Exec, supplemented by Hubbard's #1 son's input.
A very well written book about the founder of Scientology. L. Ron Hubbard was a tyrant and a lunatic, who made his followers grovel at his feet. It's a cult like any other cult, but a very dangerous one. Great read!
Shocking and true. Corydon spent many decades as a loyal member of Scientology and was among the many who suffered in the 80s when L. Ron Hubbard died and Stalinist-style purges began. His history of L. Ron is quite good too.
DRAGGED ON... FLITTED BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE THEN AND NOW...
