Ok. First, this isn’t as bad as dragons love tacos. So there’s that. BUT....Will this spark imagination? NoIs there a purpose to the story? Absolutely notWill the child learn anything? NoWith that said let it be known I am not against slight crude humor in kids books. If they’re educational and have a good message then ok fine. But here are the reasons this book is awful:1. Gift pecks parents are encouraging in the first two pages then are NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN EVEN WHEN the teacher tells him he can’t ever talk about architecture or build a single thing..2. The teacher hates architecture because she once got stuck in an elevator (with very entertaining people) .... that’s dumb3. The rhymes are a BUG stretch and it doesn’t flow. If you can’t make that work then just don’t rhyme. I feel like the rhymes took the story to a weird place instead of having a good concept for the book4. The teacher faints simply because a bridge collapses5. Iggy Peck fought for NOTHING he gave up IMMEDIATELY on his PASSION. He LUCKED into being able to build something again. The kid tried for nothing. If the rest of the story was good I guess I could over look that and find something positive to say like “oh there’s a need for architecture†but that’s not what a kid is going to grasp....6. Ummm some of the drawings are uncomfortably racist. The little Asian girl IS COLORED YELLOW! WHAT?!?!?! And this is coming from someone who doesn’t notice stuff like that very often. I debated on even putting this here because there are so many other reasons this book is awful, but I really think it needs to be pointed out....If you want a great book about building or creating something “If I Built A House†is a BILLION times better. I’m so disappointed in Iggy Peck... I’m shocked there’s a whole series!
I love this book so much. It's a great story, in a fun-to-read rhyme scheme, with absolutely fantastic illustrations. I'd recommend it to anybody who is reading aloud to a kid, and would recommend the author and illustrator's other book, Rosie Revere: Engineer, even more strongly. These are must-haves for your kid's library!
We got Iggy Peck because my son is a big fan of Rosie Revere by the same author. Unfortunately, I would say that Rosie is all around a stronger book. There’s less of a compelling moral to this story, some of the rhymes are clunkers, and the art, while still unique and charming, is a little less fantastic here. We read this less often than Rosie Revere, and it sparks fewer conversations. I appreciate the strong style of the art every time I read it.
This is a fine book, but it definitely falls short compared to Rosie Revere and Ida Twist which are both rather brilliant. The illustrations are great and so is Iggy, and the idea of introducing kids to intelligent, creative, clever and thoughtful characters is fantastic, so really this is more a 'recommend but with reservations'. If you plan on collecting the entire series, maybe just get this one last. The rhyme scheme isn't quite as good as the other two books, and I think the conflict in Iggy Peck is lacking versus the conflict in Rosie and Ida. I should point out that my son is 2.5 years old, has already selected Yale as his safety school, and LOVES Ida Twist and Rosie Revere, but he's really kinda 'meh' on Iggy Peck, but like.....what do kids know.
I've got all of the books (Rosie Revere & Ada Twist as well), and the cadence of this one is just a little off compared to the others. I would still recommend this book, as I love introducing kids to STEAM. Lower rating is due to the book arriving damaged - the book was shipped with numerous other items that were not secured properly within the box and thus damaged the corners of the book. I would advise ordering the book by itself or purchasing in-person from a retailer.
Illustrations are not for everyone as they are more artistic than cartoon-like but the story is undeniably wonderful. The text rhymes throughout the entire book so every child I've read this too, 12 months to older, have all listened well to the very end as the cadence and rhythm of the words holds their attention. The pages are nice and thick, cardstock-like paper so it's not flimsy or easy to tear. The storyline is about a little boy who builds great things like an Architect. If you want a book to encourage a child to not be afraid to be smart and to work hard for a dream or to build a career, this is definitely a book for you! Love the lesson it teaches.
I bought this for my son's 2nd birthday gift. I love being able to buy books we both enjoy now. I'm a huge fan of the rhyming and think it makes it more engaging for my little guy. He asks for Iggy by name and points out Rosie Revere in this book, and vice versa. The illustrations are a huge selling point as well. I love the vocabulary this book introduces, it has been an excellent educational resource. We talk about buildings, bridges, towers. I wish there were more science and STEM themed books that were this much fun for my toddler. I can't wait for the next book in the series coming out in 2016! :)
I love this book. My kids (5 & 2.5 years old) love this book. It's clever, rhymes and introduces children to a profession that I believe they wouldn't have learned about for years to come. Pass on the froofroo cutesy book about a puppy (don't worry we own those too) and buy something with a little more substance.
