Blackout is the perfect next installment of this series. I have been a fan of Dannika Dark from the very beginning when I read the mageri series and the book has captured my heart just like all the rest. The mix of humor and seriousness is a perfect combination. And who doesn't love a little romance thrown in. I give blackout 5 stars because any book that I read that leaves me wanting more is a book that deserves a perfect rating. I, for one can not wait for the next book to come out and will forever be a fangirl.
Why oh why do I let Dannika do this to me? I dive headfirst into the new book and I finish it in no time flat then I’m left wanting more and more. I seriously can’t recommend this author and this series enough. I’ve been in love with all of Dannika Dark’s characters since my first of her books and this series I have to admit is my favorite yet. If you like urban fantasy with a little romance on the side then pick up book one in this series and then pick up book two then book three and so on. Devour them all in one sitting and be left waiting for more like me. Misery loves company after all ;)
I really loved the mystery and the resolution to Shepard's storyline. That part of the book was excellent. In terms of the romantic aspect, perhaps my expectations were too high. I expected more relationship development after the ending of the previous book. That isn't what happened. This one was a bit of an emotional roller coaster, actually more like a big hill. It was looking up for a bit, but by the end you were left wanting and it appears we are back at square one. Their budding relationship is a big part of what captured my interest in the first book and all others thereafter, so I'm more than a little disappointed. As long as you aren't looking for romance, you will enjoy this one.
Tops on my list for this installment; I think I’ve just had it with the back and forth on again off again between Christian and Raven. Plus, I don’t see any progression in Ravens maturity, she whined through so much of this novel. Additionally, Shepherd just needs a really solid break for heavens sake. It felt like his potential for any happiness is portioned out like gruel in a Dickensian intitution. This was a cesspool of ugly that felt heavily contrived and at the end there was no real progress in the relationships or growth of the lead characters. I’m sorry but I have to be honest in acknowledging my disappointment. I love DD and her series but I’m tired of this one. I’ll have to wait and see if the next round brings something positive, some real growth and positive plot development. Otherwise this might just have to be where I stop. I still acknowledge the skill and dedication it takes to continue producing, and not every book knocks it out of the park for every reader.
Blackout is the fifth book in the Crossbreed series by Dannika Dark. I would caution against reading these books as a stand-alone. There are several interconnecting plotlines throughout the series. All of the background information is important in the development of the characters and the bigger narrative. The Crossbreed books center on Raven Black and her adventures with the Keystone group. Raven lives in Cognito where several supernatural beings cohabitate. As a member of Keystone, she does a myriad of different jobs as requested by the breed's Higher Authority. This group can be called in for a variety of things. In Blackout Keystone is tasked to secure several groups of political officials during a period of anarchy taking place in their city. The developing plots in the Crossbreed series continue to progress in Blackout. As is typical, some of the resolutions were gratifying, and some broke my heart. Raven and Christian continue to struggle with their feelings. I surmise personal issues need to be resolved for Raven and Christian's relationship to flourish. I also believe turmoil in Raven and Christian's romance is not Houdini's primary goal. I am keen on discovering what his objective is. Shepard and Niko both have demons in their pasts that are quickly catching up to the Keystone team. Although Shepard winds up better off by the end of Blackout, Niko is going to have to eliminate his demons sooner rather than later. The ensemble present in Keystone is a family. They are a bit wary perhaps, but in the end, they always support each other. In a community that is predominantly lawless, other than dealing with the most heinous of crimes, Keystone struggles to bring justice without giving into the darkness surrounding them. Rather than maintaining the focus on the supernatural elements, this is a tale about humanity. Facing loss of loved ones, rising above PTSD, dealing with extreme prejudice, fighting addiction, creating healthy relationships in both friendships and love. I feel angry with them and sad, and devastated when the world is crashing down around them, and cautiously optimistic, and happy when things go their way. These books represent a deluge of the emotional spectrum. I feel an immediate kinship with Dannika Dark's characters and gloriously praise every book she has written. I admit I have a particular fondness for the Keystone group in the Crossbreed series. I encourage everyone to reach their own conclusion.
This was another pearler in the Crossbreed series. If you're a fan of the books so far, this shouldn't disappoint you. As with the previous four installments, Book 5 is well written with plenty of angst, humour, suspense and a good dash of the wonderful Christian - swoon! Raven is a great female lead and this book really emphasises her devil-may-care attitude to approaching life and dangerous situations. We get further insight into the other Keystone characters which I find really adds to the story. A couple of the issues from previous books are tackled and resolved to a degree and there's even another visit from the enigmatic Houdini. Shepherd's storyline gets a bigger play in this book which was great. There's still heaps of intrigue woven through the book to both give us insight into the breed world as well as dangle some interesting, potential plot development for future books. Raven takes centre stage as a threat to the higher authority looms, putting at risk the carefully constructed hierarchy and established law of the breed world.Warning - you do get closure on the case the book focuses on but it does end with a bit of a cliffhanger! Overall, I loved it. The series just keeps getting better and better.
