From the Inside Flap
More than one hundred U.S. Army and Navy nurses were stationed in Guam and the Philippines at the beginning of World War II. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, five navy nurses on Guam became the first American military women of World War II to be taken prisoner by the Japanese. More than seventy army nurses survived five months of combat conditions in the jungles of Bataan and Corregidor before being captured, only to endure more than three years in prison camps. In all, nearly one hundred nurses became POWs. Many of these army nurses were considered too vital to the war effort to be evacuated from the Philippines. Though receiving only half the salary of male officers of the same rank, they helped establish outdoor hospitals and treated thousands of casualties despite rapidly decreasing supplies and rations. After their capture, they continued to care for the sick and wounded throughout their internment in the prison camps. This account of the nurses' imprisonment adds a vital chapter to the history of American personnel in the Pacific theater. Lt. Col. Madeline Ullom, one of the captured nurses, remarked, "Even though women were not supposed to be on the front lines, on the front lines we were. Women were not supposed to be interned either, but it happened to us. People should know what we endured. People should know what we can endure." When freedom came, the U.S. military ordered the nurses to sign agreements with the government not to discuss their horrific experiences. Evelyn Monahan and Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee have conducted numerous interviews with survivors and scoured archives for letters, diaries, and journals to uncover the heroism and sacrifices of these brave women. The authors' dedication to accuracy, combined with their personal expertise in medical care and military culture and discipline, has enabled them to produce a realistic reconstruction of the dramatic experiences of these POWs--All This Hell.

As a navy nurse, this was sobering & insightful. I am grateful for the legacy.
A very sad but uplifting book about the nurses who stood up and cared for prisoners of the Japanese during World War II. I especially admired the Canadian RN who defied the enemy to assure those in her care who given the protection that they needed to survive and come home. My father-in-law was a prisoner held in a Japanese POW camp.
Great book! this is an in detail account of what the nurses went thru while being Prisoners of Wars, by the Japanese while being in the Philippine and all the endurance that all the nurses went thru and kept themselves together not as an individual but as a unit. Amazing the detail of this book! I don't like to write reviews of the details of the books, because I am one that like to read a book and be surprised. Trust me when I tell you if you like the element of surprise you will enjoy this book.
Very interesting book of the nurses who also survived during WWII. Book was received in timely manner and is in excellent condition.
but!I stumbled across "And if I Perish" by the same author, and have read, and re-read that book. That is a powerful, impactful book. So, I bought this one with high expectations. This is a good book, and I'm glad I read it, but I probably would have chosen to check this one out. Not sure if I'm going to keep this in my library. It also feels a bit narrower of focus than the other book. Perhaps there were fewer interviews possible, or fewer accounts available. Just less dimensional. It's still a worthy read. I'd just check it out.
The book depicts all " the Hell" in Japanese imprisonment. It looks into female nurses role during one of the worst period of taking over the Philippines by the Japanese. The nurses did so much for our soldiers.
This book and others telling of WW II nurses service should be mandatory reading in our schools. We should all understand and honor their unsung sacrifice and devotion to duty under extremely harsh conditions.
Since I was only 7 years old when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor any events that happened at that time have always been of interest to me.This includes events in both the South Pacific and the European theater(had a favorite uncle in the 8th Air Force ) All the books I have ordered on this time period have alway read better than any of today's ficition.
