Burden's Edge was a disappointment for me so I went into this book with a bit of trepidation. The first 180 pages or so of this book were quite sluggish and I was beginning to feel like the greatness of the Arinthian Line series had basically sapped all of this author's talent and that the story and characters had jumped the shark. I'm happy to say that this book recaptured the magic for the first time in this new series and was a solid return to form for Mr. Bronny. There are good and bad things to be said about every book and I'll get the bad out of the way first. I'm convinced that this author must have been bullied pretty badly as a child because he seems to be stuck on that type of scenario for his main characters. Rendering them helpless and leaving them subject to bullying, torture and humiliation at the hands of their adversaries is becoming a bit played out at this point. It worked in the Arinthian Line series because that was when the trio were inexperienced rookies up against the odds but we're 7 books in now and the author still seems to struggle to create drama without handicapping the good guys severely and rendering them unable to fight back. At this stage; you want to see the heroes empowered but facing enemies with enough cunning and capability to still present an overwhelming challenge. Instead, Katrina replaces Robin as an adversary that never really seems to earn her victories and is not a match for the heroes but is simply protected by more plot armor than should ever be allowed. I think Mr. Bronny's real challenge as an author will be to create villains who are as formidable and (dare I say) admirable as the heroes. In doing so, he will finally escape the need to have the heroes be the powerless targets of bullies. Now on to the good stuff! This book delves into the lore of the world that the author has built and I find that the ancient history that he has conceived is extremely compelling. Much like in the Arinthian Lines series when the characters talked of the Rivicans and the Dreadnoughts; I was pulled in by the historical context that was created and the mysteries that were presented. In this book there are some huge mysteries unraveled and the overarching story has become substantially more interesting. The book also, after the first 180 pages or so, found a way to get the characters back into adventure mode. Burden's Edge was a book where the characters just seemed stifled the entire time but this book gives them back their mojo and makes things exciting again. The pacing was a little off at times and the characters still make some of the same mistakes that they made back in the earlier books but this book put the series on track and I am very much looking forward to the finale.
I have read the original 5 books and the latest 2 books in the new Fury of a Rising Dragon series and I can tell you, without a doubt, this is by far my favorite book series I have ever read. My friends ask me to describe the series to them and I like to compare this series as a mix between Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. It has all the magical elements that drew me to the Harry Potter series and the twist and turns of GOT. Also the author is not afraid to kill characters off which is a huge plus for me. The story is magnificently told with a lot of details to immerse the reader into the world of Sithesia. The way the author writes the battles are thrilling and I can see them play out like a movie in my head. I hope the story of Augum, Leera & Bridget continue for ever and I cannot wait untill the next installment. Keep them coming Mr. Bronny for you have gained a loyal fan!
I have not been this excited for a follow-up book for quite awhile and am really glad with all the directions this book has taken. This is a very refreshing and unique storyline with great character development and plot and I love the world that it has created. The first book of Fury of a Rising Dragon ended in so much of a cliff hanger that I was worried about the ending of book 2 here. I've also read a lot of books that you think a lot of book is left only to hit 91% and it becomes spell lists and a note from the author. So when I hit about 80% I was really concerned about all these things that still had to happen and they did! It was a very satisfying ending and I cannot wait for book 3!What's amazing about these books is they are on kindle unlimited and even if you buy them they are really inexpensive and i have purchased all these book! Thanks so much Mr. Bronny and keep on chugging along with this fantastic series. My only complaint was not having a pre-order available :D
A few years back, I began reading the Arinthian Line and have not stopped recommending it to anyone I know. When I describe the series to others, I state it has elements of Harry Potter (friendship), Lord of Rings (a true quest), and Percy Jackson(the banter and pace). Simply referencing the two latter series is about as big of a compliment as I can give. With the release of Honor’s Price, I was a little concerned by the direction. One of the great pitfalls I have experienced when reading fantasy (even those written by the greats) is losing the story in the story. This often happens when an author focuses on gamesmanship between characters, and thus, we are left with unnecessary expansion of the story. In Burden’s Edge, my major concern was losing the thrust of the story by focusing too much on games of cunning and wit. Fortunately, and much to the credit of Mr. Bronny, there was a significant payoff, as Honor’s Price blended those elements into the trials and tribulations faced by our heroes. In other words, the events that gave me pause proved necessary, which is an exceedingly difficult thing to do in this genre.Prior to reading Honor’s Price, I learned that this was one of Mr. Bronny’s longest books. However, it did not seem this way. The pacing was fantastic. The lulls were quick, but needed. The bond of the characters was further cemented in unexpected ways. The sad parts drove the story further. The characters remain relatable. Their fears are our fears. Their strengths are our strengths. I have given Honor’s Price 5 stars-it probably deserves more. I cannot wait until the next chapter in the series.
