Liz Gipson is rapidly becoming a go-to expert on the rigid heddle loom. She is one of a new breed of weavers who are lifting this loom out of the realm of a child's toy into a serious and highly portable weaving loom that can create complex and marvellous fabrics that can be used in the home, just as those from a 4 or more shaft floor loom are. She is also a "wicked enabler" who can persuade us that we do not need a cumbersome treadle loom, but will have plenty of space for yet another rigid heddle loom that takes up so little space when not in use, but thats for you to discover when you take a look through this book and read the projects and discover the lovely versatile looms she uses.This is more serious in content than many of the other rigid heddle books around as it ratchets the standard of weaving on these looms up a notch or two. Upholstery has always been a mainstay of the 4 shaft loom, requiring specialist weaving yarns rather than the knitting yarns that most rigid heddlers start off with, but that said, you will be pleased with how easily you can transfer your knowledge to the more serious stuff of yardage rather than scarves, bags and shawls, with the odd jumper or jacket thrown in. She goes into the reasons why you would want to use proper weaving yarns, rather than knitting yarns, and gives a run-down on what is on offer to the modern weaver, and what all the different sizes mean, because, of course, they differ according to what the yarn is made from. But it is simply explained so its not frightening or overwhelming.The book is laid out in chapters that cover the various rooms in the house from kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and lounge, and, after demonstrating quickly how to warp your loom Liz gets straight in with colour and weave, stripes and plaids, and which includes houndstooth, a rigid heddle stand-by which is amazingly effective, and later expands into Krokbragd and log cabin, as well as twills woven with a second rigid heddle attached to your loom. Luckily most loom-makers are abreast of this and your loom should be adaptable. Liz also shows how to do pick-up and inlay, and a few lacy designs, as well as using a few strategically placed rows of birds eye twill as an accent. This book proves that tradition is in safe hands! Liz is currently involved in online weave-alongs using patterns and projects from this book, for those that enjoy a class atmosphere, and cannot attend her workshops physically.
This book should be in every weavers library. Liz Gipson writes from a knowledge base that allows her to explain complicated subjects in a manner that makes them simple to understand and use. I am a floor loom weaver who has only recently taken up the rigid heddle loom.. In every chapter of her book I find tips that help me with both the rigid heddle and floor loom. Her discussion of weaving fibers is the most useful I have ever read. Even nonweavers will find information of use here. This is a book that I will use and refer to time after time. From most books, if I get one good idea, I am happy; From this book I get information and ideas I can use in every chapter.
Another great book from Liz Gipson. This one builds on her previous book, Weaving Made Easy, providing instruction, projects, hand holding help and beautiful items for the home, to weave on the rigid heddle loom.There's instruction on finishing, working with double heddles, doubleweave, basic and advanced know how to help improve one's weaving and plenty of discussion on chosing and using varied fibers, reading drafts, etc.First and foremost, is the selection of varied projects for home enhancement through weaving, not to mention fabulous gifting possibilites.
She writes in a way that all levels of weavers can understand. She is also encouraging. Her patterns are realistic and usable. I recommend any book that is written by Liz Gipson. It's money well spent.
I am having a great time perusing this book. Every project is tasteful, and as I read through the directions, doable for me as a beginning to intermediate rigid-heddle weaver. Liz Gipson has a lovely "voice" on paper (as she does in person) - helpful, common-sensical and funny. I haven't woven anything out of it yet, but at least three projects are high on my list - especially the ones that use up my knitter's stash of yarn.
I hesitated to buy this book because it just didn't strike a chord with the pictures of pillows on the front. Also I was a bit disappointed in her other book - Weaving Made Easy; too many scarves and not very challenging. Don't know what made me change my mind but this book is just what I was looking for. I've been weaving with a rigid heddle loom for about a year and am always looking for new ideas to try. Right now I'm on a placemat, towel, napkin kick - looking to apply some of the techniques I've found in other books like Inventive Weaving and The Weaver's' Ideabook. I've found some useful general information in the front/back sections -- tips and techniques, changing wefts, edge finishing techniques. I found several new projects to try that use pickup stick patterns and heddle rods to make more complex weaves. The project yarn selections, colors, and warping options give me lots of ideas. These projects are good for pushing yourself to the next level. Only wish she had more info 2 heddles.
To be honest, the cover and title of this book didn't particularly entice me. As a beginning weaver interested in clothing and accessories, I didn't think I needed a book about weaving home goods. Boy, was I wrong! This book offers SO MUCH MORE than patterns. It has loads of intermediate techniques to take your weaving beyond simple beginner scarves. The techniques apply to any and all weaving projects, not just home goods. The included projects were chosen purposefully for their education value, not just for having some things to make. I usually only skim craft books for parts that interest me, but this is a book I will read cover to cover because it has so many good tips.
